The Salmon

The salmon is a main staple of all Indigenous people and is a symbol of strength. We preserve the summer's bounty by jarring, salting, smoking and drying the salmon. This will keep us fed all winter long and we make enough to share during our feasts.

The salmon is highly respected by all Indigenous people, to not respect the salmon is to invite weakness in the runs. In recent years, this strong creature has declined in numbers and is in danger. When once all creeks and rivers were filled with salmon, we are now faced with dying rivers and endangered species.

The salmon must be preserved. It has persevered for centuries so that it can regenerate while sacrificing itself.

Please respect our waters. Salmon is our life.
